U.S. military wants to bring Android to battlefield

by admin ·

The U.S. military has shown serious interest in using Android devices during wartime missions. SOCOM developers have even called for appropriate apps to come up.

SOCOM, the commando unit of the U.S. Army would like to use Android being a completely open source operating system. This means that they understand their own apps to use and adapt in a way that suits them best on the battlefield.

The unit has asked developers to use some applications that will help soldiers stay in touch with each other during a mission. So they want a chat application and hope they will use a video feed feature to market forces.

They also asked developers to make a whiteboard-like app to build a map where one can develop specific strategies. SOCOM is all under the heading Tactical Situational Awareness Application Suite (TactSA) which is necessary for the apps to run in areas with poor mobile reception. Developers have until mid-December to present their tenders accordingly.
